As well as being Ben's Dad, Peter has also been the owner of a successful property in the New England area for over 30 years. His sound knowledge of agriculture, history in off farm sales to the industry, and connections throughout the agricultural sector ensures continuous supply of a premium product.
Peter started out as a city boy with country connections. Straight after school he left for a job in the central west at Narromine and then spent years playing rugby and doing stints on several farms in the area. Some work in a local Elders store introduced him to animal health and sales, and it was during this time that his skills in land management were cemented by old time graziers who had great experience in managing through drought and tough times.
When Peter and Trish got married a few years later there was a brief sea change as Peter looked for the right property to bring up the family on, and in 1983 the move to Barraba was made. Times were very tough initially as the property was in drought, but the rains came and Peter and Trish went about making the farm their own.
Peter moved back into animal health and covered a territory from Dubbo, north to the top of the New England. During the next decade or so he became widely known in the area for his experience and his home phone rang many times with farmers looking for advice.
It is these broad experiences that Peter brings to The Free Range Butcher; with his animal health knowledge, understanding of soil health, and the importance of the systems that support it, he is a firm believer in the Whole Farm System.
Update November 2020
Peter and Trish retired in 2020 and the family farm ‘Blue Hills” was sold after much deliberation in November of that year to a local farming family.
Peter continues to work in the business keeping an eye on our own stock on agistment on a local farm at Barraba and regularly visits our suppliers to keep his hand in the game.
